F is for Footloose (1984) #AtoZChallenge

April 6, 2012 by Emily 8 Comments

I believe the remake of Footloose has come out, I’ve seen the trailer and I don’t like it much. Footloose from 1984 is by far a much better film in my opinion. There are some films you just shouldn’t make a remake of and this is one of them. So what is this film about? Ren McCormick (Kevin Bacon), a decidedly urban teen who’s transplanted to a small Midwestern town where dancing is outlawed. Recruiting his best pal, the quiet Willard (Chris Penn), and his girlfriend (Lori Singer), a clergyman’s daughter, Ren starts a revolution by moving to the beat

I seen a couple of Kevin Bacon’s interviews, and initially he didn’t know he was going to have to dance in the film, until he was cast and they told him that he would have to take dance classes, he also said in a separate interview he was mostly concerned with can he pull off being 17, does he even look 17? To research the project better, so he wanted to enroll in a local high school as a 17 year old (then 24) from Chicago, which he did, he then went on to say that that there was a shot in the movie where he’s walking down the hall for the first time, his instinct were to strut in kind of how John Travolta did in Saturday Night Fever, but it was nothing like that, he was actually scared to death thinking ‘keep my head down’ or someone was going to punch him in the face. Needless to say this was an amazing film, I will still watch the newer version but my love is for the original.

Check out the trailer, but I’m sure most of you have seen it

True story, I used to teach at the same school that Footloose was filmed in. I didn’t have the same classroom, but it was still pretty cool to compare the movie to the real school. I guess they actually enrolled Kevin Bacon and he was picked on by the regular kids, until producers revealed that he was the star of a film they would be shooting there.

I do not understand why they remake so many good movies that do not need to be remade! Footloose is one of them. The original 1984 one with Kevin Bacon is awesome. I refuse to watch the new one just so I don’t support these remakes.

Amen! The original Footloose is one of my all-time favorites and they absolutely should’ve left it alone. The remake is lazy, in my opinion. They try to make it seem updated with minor scene changes, but I don’t think they changed one word of dialogue. Good luck with the rest of the challenge.
